Murder on the Minnesota: A Mystery Featuring George Porter Dillman and Genevieve Masefield (George Porter Dillman and Genevieve Masefield Mysteries). Murder on the Mauretania by Conrad Allen is the second book in the shipboard mystery series starring George Porter Dillman and Genevieve Masefield. This is another mystery full of beautifully dressed people who always come up with the wittiest response. Reading it, I couldnt' help but imagine Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert in the main roles with their dry humor and chemistry sparking between them.

A Mystery Featuring George Porter Dillman and Genevieve Masefield (A Shipboard Mystery Featuring George Porter Dillman & Genevieve Masefield). Published January 7, 2002 by St. Martin's Minotaur. Conrad Allen has discovered a neat solution to this dilemma: crime on the high seas

Genevieve Masefield and George Porter Dillman have met all kinds of people while sailing as ship detectives for the Cunard Line. But as they prepare to embark on yet another Atlantic crossing. Conrad Allen has discovered a neat solution to this dilemma: crime on the high seas. His detectives, George Dillman and Genevieve Masefield, are the "house dicks" on board ocean liners. They are the law within their domain and do not have to contend with police interference. On the other hand they are not policemen themselves and so we are spared another dazzling course in modern forensic science.

Those new to the series might wish to start with one of the earlier stories, however. As this 7th Shipboard Mystery begins it is March 1910 and our heroes, George and Genevieve are once again crossing the Atlantic as undercover detectives watching over the First and Second class passengers on the grand passenger liners of the day. Now though they are working for the White Star line instead of the rival Cunard line that had occupied them in the earlier volumes of the series.

November 1907. George Porter Dillman and Genevieve Masefield sail from Liverpool on the maiden voyage of the Mauretania. Posing as passengers, Dillman and Genevieve endure a nightmare voyage during which severe weather batters the vessel unmercifully and keeps the passengers away from the decks. Dillman is instrumental in rescuing a crew member from being washed overboard but he is too late to save one of the First Class passengers from the same fate. At first, it looks like a case of death by misadventure. But Dillman and Genevieve come to realise that it was an act of calculated murder, connected with the presence on board of a record shipment of gold bullion - twelve tons in all - sent from the Bank of England.

Entertaining read. I like the mysteries and all the red herrings which complicate matters. The romance between George and Genevieve, however, is a little staid. And the secondary characters weren't as interesting this time around. But this series is a fun way to pass time and I will continue on to the next one.

Allen has again created a great cast of characters and a thoroughly enjoyable story. He gives the reader a glimpse of history and society in the years of the grand ocean-going ships. Love this series!

Murder on the Mauretania (Dillman and Masefield) --Quite the setting on a former luxury ocean liner. Intrigue combines with onboard life of the segregated passenger classes. A good read that partners a gentleman and lady who are undercover company detectives. Easy reading, which led me to read several more of the sequels.

Am asbolutely loving these books and am on my third one. I worked on cruise ships for a few years and love murder mysteries, so I was thrilled to discover these. The writing is wonderful, with great characters and settings. Just love the imagery from a bygone era.

Another fun book in the series. Always a few twists and turns. These books have a formula, however they are still a good read when you need to relax and not think too much. I always like these books on holidays.
Nightscar
The fun part of this story was that even if you recognized the various bad guys, you were surprised at who committed which crime
consistently a good author
