Roses Are Dead - Loren D. Estleman. It was a comfortable old shoe of a room with a dizzying tower of leather-bound books against one wall and a single window looking out on the rough neighborhood, and a big bleached desk with a wing-backed chair behind it, and a sofa and two easy chairs covered in green leather in one corner. Its only luxury, a Persian rug embroidered in gold and silver thread, left the hardwood floor bare for two feet around it.

Estleman has written dozens of books over the years, most of them stellar examples of crime fiction (he also writes Westerns once in a while). His Amos Walker series of crime fiction novels is particularly good. This novel, however, is one in his Peter Macklin series about a Detroit hit man, published in 1985. I had never read any of the Macklin books before, so I was looking forward to this one. While it was fairly interesting, I didn't think it was nearly as well written as the Amos Walker books or his excellent Detroit historical crime fiction series (Whiskey River, Motown, King of the Corner, Edsel, Jitterbug, etc.). Still, this is a writer more mystery fans should read.

This is the second of the Peter Macklin suspense series. It is a very good story. It shows that in Detroit of the 1980's even Mafia Hitmen have troubles. Pete Macklin's Wife after discovering that her husband's eficiency expert job was really that of a hitman takes steps to divorce him,he is served papers,he obtains his boss's attorney [Klieg] and escapes a retaliatory asassination attempt on his way to protect Klieg's niece from a pornographer. A japanese asassination attempt on him misfires. He is taken to the cleaners by his wife when he is divorced. The hijackers of the Bobolo incident's boss has a killer on his trail and the attempt on his life delays him causing klieg's nice to be killed. He learns that the pornographer and his stalker are a team. He tracks them down and terminates their contracts.
Silver Globol
The second in the Peter Macklin crime suspense series. A mysterious criminal entity hires several hitmen to take out retired mobster assassin Macklin. Not at the high level of Estleman's first Macklin novel of suspense - Kill Zone - but good enough in it's own way.
