Paradigm Red by Harold King is a mixed bag. It has its pluses: 1) it is very easy to read; 2) it is not overly long, only 247 page in length (hardcover edition published by Bobbs-Merrill in 1975); and 3) it is a very interesting and suspenseful read.

But it also has several minuses: 1) lots and lots of messages send to and from Proteous, the nuclear facility's computer, all written in a different type from the rest of the book so as to look like printout from a computer terminal; 2) several messages typed on computer terminals between the novel's main characters that also looks like computer printout; 3) a large chunk of the novel is taken up with a red herring i.e., who was it that really caused the significantly bad event to happen?; 4) the book failed to convince me that the mad man's hatred toward the U.S. goverment was justifed or strong enough for him to act in the extreme manner in which he did, i.e., athough the mad man's losses were tragic, I wasn't convinced that he truly blamed the goverment; 5) quite a few chemical equations and lots of information on how to make a thermite bomb that most people might not understand and might find boring; 6) for me, the novel didn't clearly explain what happened to trigger the mistake and what exactly the resulting mistake was in connection with the significantly bad event; 7) SPOILER: the novel's ending is terribly depressing in that the bad guy wins in the end and the significantly bad event could re-occur again at any time at another nuclear facility, i.e., the whole novel happened for nothing! Paradigm Red is a govermental code word for the following word spelled backwards: egatobas
Drafted by one of mystery writing's most ingenious craftsmen, Paradigm Red is a verbal blueprint for the intricate chambers of the heart and mind, drawing the reader to the convergence of the nadir of nuclear fact and the zenith of the author's explosive imagination. In the dead of night, author Harold King conceives a nuclear excursion, tolled to the deafening roar of a klaxon under ambient red alert - the paradigm red devised by one common man of uncommon mind who has reached the flashpoint of his personal hell. It is up to Harold King to contain the destructive forces he has unleashed -- or take everyone with him.
The suspense is alarming and, ladies and gentlemen, we will be experiencing technical difficulties as we enter an era when "advanced technology has gathered its own momentum and is about to master the master." Prepare to embark on a journey to the point of no return. This compelling author's startling vision of what lies just beyond one man's grasp -- the light at the end of the tunnel -- is the first light of day, or the last thing his readers will ever see.

In Paradigm Red, published in 1974, Harold King writes, "[there is] the projected range of an estimated 1,000 nuclear power reactors by the year 2000." His prediction amounts to an operative half-truth. Approximastely 473 nuclear reactors worldwide command the attention of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). 473. This novel exposes only one reason why.
Paradigm Red was produced as the Paramount-CBS movie "Red Alert," also in novel-form. Both books are currently out-of-print but can be found using amazon.com's out-of-print book search. Definitely worth the Search. Now.
