The case against Erle Stanley Gardner is that he writes about stick characters, and at this point in time, his attitudes toward women seem archaic. THE CASE OF THE GLAMOROUS GHOST has all the aforementioned elements plus more: beautiful women, murder, misdirection, Perry's client trapped within a web of circumstantial evidence. One of Earl Stanley Gardner's less formulaic efforts in the Perry Mason series, this one has an ending that should surprise TV fans who think the killer always confesses in the end. The story features diamond smugglers, a con artist, a voyeur hiding in closets watching beautiful women bathe, and of course, Mason, Della Street, and Paul Drake forming an unbeatable trio.

Scanning errors, of the kind that move two or three lines of text around, and knock out a sentence or two, occur RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SOLUTION! Their effect is not seriously damaging, but enough to take a star off the value of the Kindle edition.

Most Perry Mason books make the same important point, which is also made in THE MALTESE FALCON: the police and district attorney decide whom they're going to prosecute, and after that they do anything, much of it unfair, to ensure a conviction. In the Perry Mason novels, prosecutors are always wrong about who really committed the murder, but, more importantly, they are wrong because once they start going after a conviction, they don't care what facts are against their theory, and they are perfectly willing to conceal important evidence from the defense in order to stop the truth from coming out -- if hiding the truth smooths the way toward their getting the guilty verdict they want.

Laws have changed since the Mason novels were written, particularly about having to give the defense important and relevant evidence. One reason for that change in the laws may be that Erle Stanley Gardner, in his novels and in his own legal work, made clear to the public how unfairly prosecutors of his time were allowed to operate.

Just something to throw into the hopper along with all the talk about how the Perry Mason mysteries are implausible and badly written.

Liked it because I'm a fan of Perry Mason and enjoy reading how he comes up with the most obscure evidence to win the day. This was as far fetched as all the others. It kept me guessing because I'd suspected the wrong person all along. I don't know that he could get away with all his histrionics in today's courtroom, but courtroom scenes are enjoyable to read. I enjoy what Gardner comes up with to have Perry Mason vest the district attorney even when it appears it is a slam dunk.
