Oh my, that smells good," he wheezed

Donna Galanti has created a thriller with a huge, aching heart. Galanti's rich and provocative thriller asks big questions. What makes us human, what makes us monstrous? Is there a love that can transcend the physical and emotional, to the supernatural? Galanti has given us an impressive debut.

Then one night, when Joshua and his best friend are home alone during a frightful storm, Joshua learns his grandpa was right. Galanti also gives us love and hope within the pages that helped offset the dark and allowed me to catch my breath. I enjoyed the author’s detailed characterizations and excellent milieu descriptions. I immersed myself in the first half of this book, and at first I didn’t mind what I thought was a predictable story or knowing who the killer was.
As the novel progressed, urban fantasy-ish cliches began to niggle at the back of my mind. I stopped and considered: The setting is our world with murders, action, romance, steamy sex scenes, child-abuse, attempted m/m rape, mad scientists, a failed science experiment, magic, a Man in Black, government conspiracies, mysterious twins.
Add to that: horror elements, aliens, deformed alien-human hybrids, mind-reading, foreseeing the future, predictions of fate/destiny, characters gaining fantastic alien powers, and a Deus Ex Machina-like character who materializes at the right time.
That said, the author writes well, and kudos to the editor/grammarian looking over her shoulder.
I will probably read another of her books.

A story involving the half-alien/half-human twins that were separated at birth living two very different lives; one raised as a normal human, the other a science experiment. The story line was unique with interesting characters and events. There was a lot of action and suspense, which was what kept me reading. I found myself skipping over the sex scenes, which there were a few too many of for my liking, as they were very graphic and steamy.
I’m not a big fan of prologues (most are way over written), and this one almost turned me off, but the first chapter of the book was intriguing and kept me reading.
There were quite a few grammatical errors, and missing words, which caused pause but didn’t take away from the story.

exceptional talents. She can read people's
minds. She can move objects with her mind.
Raised by adopted parents, she grows with happiness., as any normal child should. But,

.Donna is Brilliant! What an amazing grasp of both the Light and darkness side of Human nature. Donna has some serious incite on the condition of the human soul. As well as the condition of the human mind and hearts. Within the book, you follow the characters from time of devastation and the will and strength of what they will do or how far they will go to rationalize their actions both good and bad. I like the humor she lightens the mood just to turn the lights out on you.
Ben, 9yrs old when his mom and dad were killed by a freak occurrence of a meteorite fell to earth and how it changed him. Sarah, who was giving birth and was vulnerable to the cruelty of the Doctor and nurses who were driven by greed and put little stock in their Hippocratic Oath. Laura, her secret ability and how far she will go to find the killer of her parents. Jim and Scooter. Jim and Laura and Charlie a man who hates everyone and everything with Laura at the top of his list. The line of good or bad is not always clear as in the case of Felix.

I've been hard pushed to find books recently that keep me gripped, and A HUMAN ELEMENT did. I was reading 3 books at the time, and this is the one that was my first go-to.

A sci-fi thriller/mystery, the plot barrels along from page one. I'm not a fan of books told from several points of view - 2 or 3 is Ok, when the plot is weighted between them - but ELEMENT is not only told from that Laura, whose story this essentially is, and Ben, whose story weaves around hers, and eventually into it, but also that of several lesser characters: the wonderful Jim B., the evil antagonist, evil a's captor, for e.g. But Galanti's writing kept me held, and the switches were credible and refreshing when they happened - I was ready for a new voice each time, and it actually served to hold me in the story rather than distract me.

I won't go into plot - the blurb can do that better anyway! - but this a gritty book, not for the faint-hearted, featuring a cold killer who is after Laura's blood. Galanti, once a navy photographer, weaves in her knowledge of that world with the other main character (and Laura's love interest), Ben. The overarching theme of the book is that out of adversity comes life's gift, an idea which is pivotal to the ending.

The one thing that lets this book down is its poor editing, which is a shame. However, Galanti's writing and plot-weaving is strong enough to withstand the errors which normally I'd find hard to read through. A credit to the author on this thrilling debut which combines sci-fi, horror and romance all in one harrowing ride.
