I don’t want to hear. She kept her eyes down, staring at her bare feet. Her toenails were painted pink. Here, they were gray, like everything else. The blood was always red. She had forgotten that. You have to listen to us. No, I don’t. We can help you. No one can help me. Not to do that, what you’re asking me to do. It’s impossible. At the edge of her vision, she saw the blood creeping toward her and immediately took a step backward. I can’t go back now. I can never go back.

The elite Special Crimes Unit, the FBI’s most controversial and effective team, is a group of mavericks and misfits trained to use their unique psychic abilities to hunt the worst monsters imaginable – human ones. Led by the enigmatic Noah Bishop, the SCU team has earned a reputation for pitting their skills and cunning against killers that other cops fear. But this time Bishop and his agents face an enemy who has them in his sights, a trained sniper with a deadly plan — and more than one ace up his sleeve. It starts with an unspeakable series of grisly murders across three states, a trail of blood leading, finally, to the small Tennessee town of Serenade. There, two more brutal murders lure the SCU into what may be the ultimate trap. One of the first investigators on the scene, Special Agent Hollis Templeton is willing to push herself as hard and as far as necessary. Risking more than her life to help and protect her fellow SCU members, Hollis is coping with psychic abilities that are evolving in unprecedented ways, an attraction to the most complex man she’s ever known, and a serial murder investigation that has just turned very, very personal. In her time with the SCU, Hollis has shown an uncanny ability to survive even the most deadly attacks. But what she doesn’t count on is that this killer intends to destroy the team from within. The clock is ticking. The body count is rising. And as Bishop and his agents race to uncover the identity of their true enemy, not even their special senses can warn them just how bloody, and how terrifyingly close, the truth will be.

A serial killer had made the quiet little town of Serenade, Tennessee his playground. Several things confuse the SCU. While the first victims were cut up and tortured, a deputy was killed with the same bullet that has put Diana Brisco in critical condition. Are they looking for more than one killer? The killers also get away without a trace. Do they have psychic powers?

The SCU also suspect that someone has been spying on Diana while she is in the gray time.

SPOILERS
There are 3 killers and they are following Samual's orders even if he was killed in the last book.

The one being spied on is Galen. He didn't know he even had brothers.

All those properties across country make sense since Samuel has been collecting psychics and tutoring then to do evil in his name. He wants to collect enough energy to bring himself back to life

Elliott Brisco, Diana's father has been funding Samuel and his pet monsters to destroy Noah Bishop for taking away the control he had over his daughter

For fans of Hooper's Special Crimes Unit series, BLOOD TIES brings to a conclusion the story of the hidden enemy trying to destroy the SCU and also moves forward the personal relationships of several couples.

THE STORY: The Special Crimes Unit of the FBI is made up of agents who possess paranormal talents. Throughout the Blood Trilogy, the SCU has discovered that they have an enemy who is out to destroy the unit and its head, Noah Bishop. Now a series of murders has brought many of the team members to a small town in Tennessee. It appears that the murders have been a lure to bring the team to town in order to destroy them. The team members have to discover who is their enemy and defeat him in a final showdown.

OPINION: BLOOD TIES nicely integrates the stories from several other books. While the main interest is the final showdown with their "big bad", I appreciated this book because it finally progressed the stories of several other couples. Diana and Quentin who first began their romance in CHILL OF FEAR finally get a chance to have their relationship be made central to a story. There is also the start of a relationship between Hollis Templeton and Reese Demarco. While not dominating the story, I appreciated that the personal side of the story was not neglected in the gore and suspense of the story. Honestly, I read these stories because I like the characters and I liked that the revelations of the story were built upon the characters and their relationships. For fans of the series, this book brings together so many threads and brings back so many characters that it is like a family reunion (with murders and paranormal intrigue).

WORTH MENTIONING: Fans, like me, who were somewhat dejected by the end of CHILL OF FEAR will be happy to know that Diana and Quentin get a great deal of space in this book.

FINAL DECISION: This is one of my favorites of the series even though it is one of the saddest in many ways. I appreciated that the story foundation is based on the characters and their relationships. The mystery is tied up in a way that was satisfying.

CONNECTED BOOKS: This is the twelfth book in the Bishop/Special Crimes Unit series. This book is also the third book of the internal Blood Trilogy. Finally, the book is also a sequel of CHILL OF FEAR. While a new reader might be able to figure out all of the players, I think the story does not have much power unless a reader is familiar with the background of the major players and I think CHILL OF FEAR and the first two books of the Blood Trilogy are required reading.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.

A culmination of the trilogy but confusing in its plethora of characters. The paranormal romances that underlay many of her previous Bishop-related novels is almost completely absent in this one but many of the same beloved characters are revisted. Hollis Templeton and her development seem to take on a greater role in this novel, continuing from the previous and leading to the next. However, with SOOO many characters to track as well as the convoluted nature of the attack, it was a bit much.

I have been a huge Kay Hooper fan for many years. I was very disappointed in the last several books and had decided to not purchase her stuff at all any more but wait for the library copy to be available. I saw this one on sale and decided to give her 1 more try. I'm glad I did. Blood Ties is not as good as the earlier installments (I agree with the other reviewer that said the 1st trilogy is the best) but it is much better than the last 2.

Her writing style is returning to the earlier books and the suspense is definitely back. The story seems to be put together better, like more thought was put into it. This one certainly ties the others together, and had at least one twist I didn't see coming. I prefer stand alone books in a series, and this does not fit that bill. If you have not read the earlier trilogies, don't start with this one. You will not be able to follow the story at all; it's too confusing without the background info. That's my biggest complaint.

I will wait patiently for the next installment, hoping it tells the story of Hollis and Reese. They both fascinate me.

I love the Kay Hooper books. And I think she did a great job with this one. I almost feel as though she read my book review of her last book and answered what I said.

She added a list of characters to the book and detailed in which books they appear.
She added references to each chapter about the books in which events had happened originally.

There were a lot of characters brought up in the book, but not necessarily to their best advantage. I think that she mentioned a lot of them, but they either saw very little action or barely spoke. It cluttered the landscape of the story, rather than enhancing it.

As a whole, though, Kay Hooper always puts out a great story that keeps you coming back for more. And I have to say, no matter what, it's still better than Twilight.

This book was filled with suspense, deception and a lot of action. This was my favorite book so far in the series. I love the breakdown of the agents and their abilities in the back of the book. I love all the characters but hate when they are killed or something bad happens to them. I can't wait to start the next book in the series.
