This book is an excellent resource for any person that desires to learn about Ethernet systems. It provides a methodical description of Ethernet technology, starting with an easy-to-understand description of the MAC and Physical Layer in 10 Megabit per second (MB/s) systems. The descriptions of second generation (100 MB/s) and third generation (1000 MB/s) Ethernet technology are both clear and comprehensive, giving the reader a full understanding of the technology and an appreciation of design issues encountered during implementation.
This book is a good balance between theory and practice, includes many examples.
I needed a reference that would help explain the numerous ethernet specifications and this book did the job. The book covers the development of ethernet from standard ethernet (10Mb/s) and fast ethernet (100Mb/s) through the latest gigabit ethernet (1000Mb/s) implementations. The book strength is in how the authors explain the evolution of ethernet with detailed references made to current industry specifications.
I found the book to be a comprehensive, authoritative resource while preparing my technical tutorial 'Gigabit Ethernet and Next Generation LANs', delivered at the Next Generation Networks Symposium in Washington, DC on 11/2/98.
Well written and easy to understand
