Like all of the books in Fellrangers that I've read, firstly some caveats. The maps are only 40K, which isn't really good enough, and the Wainwright style 3D routes lack detail.

Like all of the books in Fellrangers that I've read, firstly some caveats. Having said all that, the book is invaluable for the information concerning the QUALITY of the paths Mr Richards describes, and for this reason I could absolutely recommend this book.

The Western Fells (Lakeland Fellranger) by Mark Richards Paperback £1. 5. Fellrangers" are inspirational and thorough - and together the eight books in the series provide a comprehensive and contemporary guide to the fells of the English Lake District. Temporarily out of stock. FREE Delivery in the UK. Details. The guides in the "Fellranger" series are ideal for practical use outdoors, and are equally useful for armchair planning. Each fell has its own dedicated chapter, and the variety of routes on the fell are carefully depicted on Harvey maps and fellscape diagrams.

This now completes my collection of Lakeland Fellranger books by Mark Richards. They compliment my Wainwright set beautifully. Because of the type of paper and method of binding these are better suited to taking on a fell walk then the wainwright ones. And the photos help with getting bearings. They are a really good read and help pass away those grey days until you can get out on the fells again.

Each of the 22 fells has a dedicated chapter describing a plethora of hiking routes of differing characters and difficulties (from wide bridleways up to easy scrambles), which can easily be combined to make ascents, descents, traverses or ridge routes.
