I couldn't get to Bath itself, but needed to research it for an Austen-related novel of my own. While I cannot say this answered ALL my questions, it was certainly a dandy starter; and Wikipedia filled in much of the rest. I'd call it an excellent addition to any Jane Austen collection, so snap it up while it's still in print. The great difficulty I can see with it as a guide to carry with you around the city is that ... it's so darn beautifully printed and bound, seems rather a shame to subject it to the rigors of a pocket companion during walking tours.

I, together with my two sons and daughter-in-law, visited Bath about three weeks ago and used this book as our guide. It proved excellent.
Regrettably, Bath itself looked rather run down and ill maintained, as opposed to the shining white Bath I had remembered from the 1990s. It was a pity, too, that the on-going Jane Austen festival had no visible presence in the streets. You either had to book in advance very expensive tickets to the indoors events, or you missed the whole thing.
However, this has nothing to do with the excellent quality of this handy guide.

For those interested in a view of the city in Jane Austen's time, this slender volume, writen by a guide from the Jane Austen Center, presents a wealth of information. Need to know which were the most fashionable residences? Where the poor lived in the most unsavory areas? Where the warehouses were located that stockpiled furniture for those who wanted a furnished townhouse, quickly? Reeve's book has it all and more. An excellent resource for the period writer.
