Edward Snow is doing important work. Robert Lowell once wrote that it was hard to imagine Rilke first written in English, that the poems were sealed in German. Snow is unsealing them. Robert Phillips, Houston Chronicle. Praise for the Duino Elegies.
The Book of Hours (German: Das Stunden-Buch) is a collection of poetry by the Bohemian-Austrian poet and novelist Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926). The collection was written between 1899 and 1903 in three parts, and first published in Leipzig by Insel Verlag in April 1905. With its dreamy, melodic expression and neo-Romantic mood, it stands, along with 'The Lay of the Love and Death of Christoph Cornet', as the most important of his early works.
Rilke later told me how these elegies arose. He suspected nothing of what was taking hold inside him; though he may have hinted of it in a letter he wrote: The nightingale is approaching- Had he perhaps felt what was on its way? But things seemed again to fall silent. Rilke was elated; he copied the poem into a green leather-bound notebook that he and the princess had bought together in Weimar and sent it to her in Vienna on January 21 as the first Duino work (and the first for a long time!). Within days he had composed the effortless-seeming Second Elegy as well, along with fragments of the third, sixth, and ninth, and the opening fifteen lines of the tenth.

Rainer Maria Rilke 1906 Rilke, At first, Rilke had a difficult time in Paris, an experience that he called on in the first part of his only novel, The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge. At the same time, his. encounter with modernism was very stimulating: Rilke became deeply involved in the sculpture of Rodin, and then with the work of Paul Czanne. Heidegger ranks Rilke in the German poetic tradition as second only to Friedrich Hlderlin. Frankfurt am Main and Leipzig (1996 and 2003).
